Significant increase in cybercrime incidents targeting India, originating from Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos :MHA

The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which comes under Indian Home Ministry has observed a significant increase in cybercrime incidents targeting India, originating from Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos. These cybercrime operations use various deceptive strategies, including:

  • Recruitment efforts through social media to lure Indian youths with fake employment opportunities
  • Engagement in cyber scams like investment scams, pig butchering scams, trading app scams, and dating scams
  • Communication via messaging platforms using Indian SIM cards to target Indian nationals
  • Illicit gains laundered through Indian bank accounts, cryptocurrency transactions, and cash withdrawals across various countries

The I4C has received a significant number of complaints regarding investment scams, trading scams, digital arrest scams, matrimony scams, and dating scams, mostly originating from these countries.

In a recent operation, the Visakhapatnam Cyber Crime Police arrested three local agents who were luring Indian youth with fraudulent job promises in Cambodia, uncovering a human trafficking racket.

The I4C is working to tackle these issues and improve coordination between Law Enforcement Agencies and stakeholders to ensure a cyber-safe India.
