Rajnath Singh to Meet Maldives Defence Minister

New Delhi: Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Maldives Defence Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon in New Delhi on January 8, 2025. The meeting aims to strengthen defence cooperation between the two nations.

The bilateral talks will focus on various aspects of defence cooperation, including training and capacity-building programmes, joint military exercises and operations, defence projects and infrastructure development, and supply of defence equipment and technology.

India and the Maldives have a long-standing strategic partnership, with the Maldives being a key partner in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. This policy aims to promote stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The two nations share historical, cultural, and strategic ties, making their relationship a vital component of regional security.

Both India and the Maldives play crucial roles in maintaining safety and security in the IOR. Their defence cooperation is expected to contribute to India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

Maumoon will be on a three-day visit to India from January 8 to 10, 2025. Apart from his meeting with Rajnath Singh, he will also visit Goa and Mumbai, further strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
