PM Narendra Modi Vows to Preserve and Promote Pali Language
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the International Abhidhamma Divas celebration, emphasizing the significance of the Pali language in understanding Buddha’s teachings and India’s rich heritage. He declared the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Pali, recognizing its classical status.
Modi highlighted Pali’s importance, stating that language is the soul of a civilization, its culture, and heritage. He acknowledged that centuries of colonial rule and invaders tried to erase India’s identity, and those with a “slave mindset” continued this trend after independence.
The government is working to revive India’s Buddhist heritage, having retrieved over 600 artifacts, mostly Buddhist objects, in recent years. To promote Pali, the government will utilize apps, digitization, and archival research. Modi stressed the need for both academic and spiritual efforts to understand Pali.
The Prime Minister further said that “We are trying to promote Pali through apps, digitisation, and archival research. Both academic and spiritual efforts are needed to understand Pali. Scholars and academics should guide the people in understanding Buddha Dhamma,” said PM.
The event, organized by the International Buddhist Confederation under the Ministry of Culture, drew 2,000 delegates and ambassadors from over 10 countries. It featured exhibitions on Pali scripts and the life and teachings of Buddha.
Modi encouraged the youth to take pride in India’s culture, values, and roots while leading the world in science and technology. He emphasized India’s commitment to rapid development and reviving its heritage.
Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Kiren Rijiju attended the event, along with senior monks and international dignitaries. The Prime Minister performed Chivar Dana and interacted with the Sangha.
