NIA Takes Over Probe into 3 Manipur Violence Cases

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched investigations into three major cases related to the recent spate of violence in Manipur. The move comes after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the NIA to take over the cases and bring the culprits to justice expeditiously.

The three cases, which were re-registered by the NIA on November 13, 2024, include the Borobekra violence, the attack on a CRPF post, and the murder of a woman at Jiribram.

In the first case, several houses were burnt, and two civilians were killed in Borobekra. Unknown militants also abducted and murdered six people, including three women and three children. The NIA has re-registered the case as RC-15/2024/NIA/IMP under various sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Arms Act, 1959.

The second case relates to the attack on a CRPF post at Jakuradhor Karong and Borobekra police stations, Jiribam, on November 11. Armed militants fired at the post, injuring a CRPF constable. The NIA has re-registered the case as RC-14/2024/NIA/IMP under various sections of the BNS, 2023, and the Arms Act, 1959.

The third case involves the brutal murder of a 31-year-old woman, who was raped and burnt alive by fully armed militants at her residence in Jiribram on November 7. The NIA has re-registered the case as RC-13/2024/NIA/IMP under relevant sections of the BNS, 2023, the Arms Act, 1959, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

NIA teams visited the spots on November 21-22, 2024, and initiated the probe. The process of handing over case documents from local police to NIA is currently underway.
