India’s Island Territories to Go Green: 100% Renewable Energy by 2025

New Delhi: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, chaired the 7th meeting of the Island Development Agency (IDA) in New Delhi, unveiling a comprehensive plan to drive sustainable development and growth in India’s strategic island territories. Amit Shah emphasized government’s vision is the ambitious plan to achieve 100% renewable energy generation in the island territories.

Shah said that the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable development in the island territories, highlighting the importance of renewable energy, infrastructure growth, and eco-friendly tourism. He directed the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to implement the ‘PM Surya Ghar’ scheme, providing solar panels to all households in the island territories.

The Union Home Minister also stressed the need for a holistic approach to infrastructure development, calling for greater collaboration among central ministries, state governments, and local stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of preserving the unique cultural and environmental heritage of the island territories while promoting sustainable development.

Amit Shah assured the island communities that the government is committed to accelerating development works, while ensuring that local communities benefit from these initiatives. He issued clear directives to address pending issues and expedite the completion of ongoing projects.

The meeting marked a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to promote sustainable development and prosperity in India’s island territories. With Shah’s comprehensive plan, the island territories are poised for transformative growth, balancing economic development with environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.

The meeting brought together top officials, including Admiral (Retd.) D K Joshi, Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Praful Patel, Administrator of Lakshadweep, to review the progress of ongoing development initiatives in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

The comprehensive plan outlined by Shah includes implementation of the ‘PM Surya Ghar’ scheme, emphasis on renewable energy, infrastructure growth, and eco-friendly tourism, holistic approach to infrastructure development, preservation of unique cultural and environmental heritage, and acceleration of development works with a focus on benefiting local communities.
