Indian Navy Ship Brahmaputra Catches Fire and Lists in Mumbai Dockyard, One Sailor Missing
A devastating accident occurred onboard Indian Naval Ship (INS) Brahmaputra, a multi-role Frigate, on the evening of July 21, 2024, while undergoing refit at Naval Dockyard (ND) in Mumbai. A fire broke out, but was brought under control by the ship’s crew, assisted by firefighters from ND and other ships in the harbor, by the morning of July 22.
However, the situation took a turn for the worse in the afternoon when the ship experienced severe listing to one side (port side). Despite valiant efforts, the ship could not be stabilized and continued to list, eventually coming to rest on its side alongside the berth.
Fortunately, all personnel have been accounted for, except one junior sailor, who remains missing. A search operation is currently underway to locate the missing sailor.
The Indian Navy has ordered an inquiry to investigate the accident and determine its cause. The incident raises concerns about the safety and maintenance of Indian Naval vessels.
The INS Brahmaputra is a vital asset to the Indian Navy.
