India Launches ‘Samarthak’, First Multi-Purpose Vessel for Indian Navy

The Indian Navy achieved a significant milestone today, October 14, 2024, with the launch of its first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), ‘Samarthak’, at L&T’s Kattupalli shipyard in Chennai. ‘Samarthak’, meaning ‘Supporter’, is designed to play a multi-dimensional role.

The launch ceremony was attended by Shashi Tripathi, President of the Navy Wives Welfare Association, who launched the ship according to maritime traditions. Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, presided over the ceremony.

The Ministry of Defence and L&T Shipyard signed a contract for building two MPVs on March 25, 2022. These vessels will enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities in towing, recovering targets, operating autonomous vehicles, and testing indigenous weapons and sensors.

The MPV measures 106 meters in length and 16.8 meters in width, with a maximum speed of 15 knots.

This launch demonstrates India’s progress in indigenous shipbuilding, aligning with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. The Indian Navy remains committed to self-reliance in shipbuilding, strengthening its maritime capabilities.

The successful launch of ‘Samarthak’ underscores the Navy’s dedication to modernization and its role in securing India’s interests. The vessel’s multi-purpose design will provide invaluable support to various naval operations.
