India Intensifies Fight Against Air Pollution
New Delhi: The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has urged NCR states to strictly implement Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage-II measures to combat air pollution. This directive follows a review meeting to monitor enforcement actions taken by state governments to abate air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The CAQM emphasized the need for stringent enforcement to control air pollution from various sectors, particularly paddy stubble burning, transport, and industrial emissions. Mechanized sweeping, water sprinkling, and anti-smog guns will be intensified to reduce pollution.
NCR states have been directed to augment their capacity for mechanized road sweeping and water sprinkling, identify high-rise buildings for Anti-Smog Gun installation, and deploy Nodal Officers to address hotspot pollution.
The Commission also stressed strict implementation of Supreme Court orders on firecrackers, especially during festivals coinciding with peak paddy harvesting season.
The GRAP, revised in September 2024, outlines comprehensive measures to control pollution based on air quality stages. The Commission underscored the importance of coordination among agencies to prevent further stage invocations.
Implementing agencies having regular reviews and effective actions across sectors to ensure improved air quality in the NCR.
The CAQM is closely monitoring progress and enforce compliance to safeguard public health and the environment.
