India has surpassed China as the top sender of students to the United States, with over 330,000 Indians pursuing higher education in the US in 2023/2024, marking a 23% increase from the previous year.
India retained its position as the top sender of international graduate students for the second consecutive year, with nearly 197,000 students, a 19% increase from last year.
The number of Indian students in OPT programs rose by 41% to 97,556, solidifying India’s role as a leading source of skilled professionals in the US.
A 300% increase in American students choosing India as a study abroad destination, with numbers rising from 300 to 1,300 in 2022/2023.
The United States and India have strengthened their partnership in education, fostering collaboration from early childhood education to promoting two-way student mobility at undergraduate and graduate levels. This partnership has now expanded with the launch of the new “Women in STEMM Fellowship” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), empowering early-career women scientists and researchers in India to become leaders in their STEMM fields.
