India-France Bilateral Naval Exercise Varuna: Strengthening Maritime Cooperation

The Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate, INS Tabar, and Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance (LRMR) P8I aircraft participated in the 22nd edition of the India-France Bilateral Exercise VARUNA, held in the Mediterranean Sea from September 2-4, 2024. This exercise marked a significant milestone in the maritime domain, showcasing the Indian Navy’s outreach and commitment to sustained operations beyond the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

VARUNA, which began in 2001, is a cornerstone of the India-France naval relationship, fostering interoperability and exchange of best practices. The exercise involved advanced naval operations, including tactical maneuvers, anti-submarine warfare, flying exercises, air defense drills, live weapon firings, and photo exercises. Assets from both navies seamlessly integrated in all three domains: air, surface, and sub-surface.

The Indian Navy was represented by INS Tabar, commanded by Captain MR Harish, and the LRMR P8I aircraft, while the French Navy participated with FS Provence, Submarine Suffren, Aircraft F20, Atlantique2, fighters MB339, and Helicopters NH90 and Dauphin.

The successful conduct of VARUNA demonstrates the commitment of both navies to enhancing interoperability through collaborative efforts.
