India-Algeria Defence Partnership Gets Boost as CDS General Chauhan Visits
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan led a high-ranking Indian military delegation to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria from October 31 to November 3, 2024. This visit marked a significant step in strengthening India-Algeria relations, which have seen increased cooperation in trade, education, technology, and defence.
During the visit, General Chauhan and his Algerian counterpart, General of Army Said Chanegriha, signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation. This agreement not only enhances bilateral military cooperation but also lays the groundwork for long-term collaboration across various sectors.
General Chauhan commended General Chanegriha on the impressive military parade and commemorative events marking Algeria’s 70th Anniversary of the Glorious Revolution. He interacted with the Director of the Higher War College and addressed senior officers of the People’s National Army, highlighting the shared history and values between the two nations.
General Chauhan emphasized India’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, stating, “India always supports peaceful resolution to global conflicts.” He also welcomed the re-establishment of India’s Defence Wing in Algeria and the reopening of Algeria’s Defence Wing in India.
The Chief of Defence Staff outlined India’s National Security Strategy, emphasizing the country’s desire to engage as a “Vishwa-Bandhu” – a reliable partner for the world. He highlighted India’s advancements in space sciences and technology development.
General Chauhan noted that the Indian Armed Forces are undergoing transformation and are ready to share their experiences with Algeria’s People’s National Army. He emphasized India’s growing defence production capabilities under the “Make in India” and “Make for the World” initiatives.
India and Algeria’s commitment to self-determination, sovereignty, and mutual support in multilateral domains forms the foundation of their strategic partnership. As regional leaders in South Asia and North Africa, both countries bring unique advantages to the table, contributing to a more balanced global order.
This high-level visit complements the recent visit by the President of India to Algeria, demonstrating strong political will on both sides to deepen diplomatic, military, and strategic cooperation. The future of India-Algeria relations looks promising, with cooperation set to expand across multiple sectors.
