Finland Unveils World’s First National Soundscape On Independence Day
Helsinki: Finland made history on 6th December by unveiling the world’s first national soundscape, Ääniä, on its 107th Independence Day. This groundbreaking musical work, composed by Lauri Porra, takes listeners on a journey through Finland’s serene beauty, seasons, and cultural heritage.
Ääniä, meaning “sounds” or “voices” in Finnish, is a 15-composition, one-hour musical masterpiece that showcases the country’s unique sonic identity. Porra, a renowned Finnish composer and bassist, drew inspiration from his travels and experiences to create a soundscape that embodies the essence of Finland.
“I started to create musical snapshots of Finland that I could listen to on my trips, in order to relax and create a little Finnish bubble around me,” Porra explained. “Those snapshots evolved into Finland’s official soundscape, which I hope will transport people to the heart of Finland.”
Finland’s Ambassador for Culture and Creative Industries, Paula Parviainen, emphasized the significance of Ääniä. “Finns have always been deeply connected to their natural surroundings and cultural heritage. We wanted to bring these to a wider audience in a way that transcends languages and borders.”
Ääniä, translating to “sounds” or “voices” in Finnish, comprises 15 compositions spanning one hour of music. As a descendant of the legendary Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, Porra has had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed orchestras globally, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. His extensive career, which also includes being the bassist for the power metal band Stratovarius, has led him to perform in over 50 countries worldwide.
“This understated, minimalist music is meant to create a certain atmosphere,” says Porra. “What’s being depicted is space. There’s space to think, feel and live in Finland – not only in nature, but also in the Finnish way of life.”
Ääniä is now available for the world to experience, offering a unique glimpse into Finland’s culture and mentality. As the world’s first national soundscape, Ääniä is set to become an iconic representation of Finland’s unique identity.
