Daring Helicopter Rescue: Indian Navy Evacuates Injured Chinese Mariner from Bulk Carrier

In a remarkable display of swift response and coordination, the Indian Navy successfully evacuated a critically injured Chinese mariner from a bulk carrier off the coast of Mumbai on July 23, 2024. The rescue operation was undertaken in challenging weather conditions, showcasing the Indian Navy’s commitment to saving lives at sea.

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai received a distress call from the bulk carrier ZHONG SHAN MEN, reporting heavy blood loss due to a critical injury to a 51-year-old Chinese mariner. The vessel was located approximately 370 km from Mumbai, necessitating a rapid response to prevent further deterioration of the patient’s condition.

Responding to the medical emergency, a Seaking helicopter was launched from Indian Naval Air Station INS Shikra at 0550 hours. The helicopter faced challenging conditions, including winds over 45 knots and heavy roll of the ship, making it difficult to access the patient. Moreover, the continuous deck of the vessel did not have a clear area for landing, adding to the complexity of the operation.

Undeterred by these challenges, the Indian Navy’s helicopter crew successfully airlifted the patient from the bridge wing of the vessel. The patient was then transported back to the air station and subsequently shifted to a hospital for further medical management.

The Indian Coast Guard vessel ICGS Samrat, which was in the area, was also diverted to render assistance in the operation. The joint effort coordinated by MRCC (Mumbai) and the Indian Navy ensured the safe and timely evacuation of the patient.

This successful medevac operation highlights the Indian Navy’s capabilities in responding to medical emergencies at sea and its commitment to saving lives, regardless of nationality. The operation also demonstrates the effective coordination between the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and MRCC in responding to distress calls and ensuring the safety of mariners.
