Chilean Foreign Minister’s India Visit Boosts Bilateral Relations

In a significant development, Alberto van Klaveren, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile, paid an official visit to India from August 27 to 31, 2024. The visit marked a crucial milestone in the bilateral relations between India and Chile, with a focus on strengthening cooperation in various areas.

During the 2nd India-Chile Joint Commission Meeting on August 28, co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and FM van Klaveren, the ministers reviewed bilateral relations and held wide-ranging discussions on strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture, critical minerals, digital public infrastructures, defense, railways, health and pharmaceuticals, science and technology, Antarctica and space, and people-to-people ties.

The ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest and reiterated their commitment to closer cooperation in multilateral fora. In addition, FM van Klaveren met with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal to discuss ways to deepen and diversify bilateral trade and economic relations.

During his visit, FM van Klaveren inaugurated the Chile-India Business Summit, delivered a lecture on Chile’s foreign policy at Jawaharlal Nehru University, and participated in various events in Mumbai, including a Chilean wine-tasting event and a seminar on filming in Chile.

The visit of FM van Klaveren provided an opportunity to review the progress in bilateral cooperation and helped in advancing India-Chile ties further. The strengthening of relations between the two countries is expected to have a positive impact on trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.
