Australia Deploys EA-18G Growler Aircraft to India: A First in Combat Aircraft Deployment

In a historic move, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has sent combat aircraft to India for the first time to participate in Exercise Tarang Shakti 24, a multinational exercise being held at Air Force Station Jodhpur from August 30 to September 13, 2024.

The RAAF has deployed three EA-18G Growler aircraft from No 6 Squadron, along with up to 120 personnel, to join forces with 11 participating nations and 18 observer nations in the exercise. This marks the first time India has conducted Exercise Tarang Shakti, which aims to foster international cooperation and address shared security challenges.

Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell emphasized Australia’s commitment to supporting regional partners and prioritizing practical cooperation with India, a top-tier security partner, through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“India is a top-tier security partner for Australia, and through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Australia and India, the Government is continuing to prioritise practical and tangible cooperation that directly contributes to Indo-Pacific stability,” Air Marshal Chappell said.

Participation in Exercise Tarang Shakti 24 showcases Australia’s advanced capabilities, ensuring rapid response and adaptability to emerging threats and security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The exercise provides opportunities for aviators to develop interoperability with foreign militaries, mutual understanding of tactical operations, and foster international relations.

Australia and India have enjoyed increased air defence cooperation in recent years, including hosting Indian Air Force Flankers at Exercise Pitch Black in 2018, 2022, and 2024. The RAAF also conducts training and engagement activities with Indian Navy P-8I Neptune surveillance aircraft.
