In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Phantom, a brave Belgian Malinois sniffer dog from the Indian Army, made the ultimate sacrifice during a counter-terror operation in Jammu’s Battal region on October 28.
The operation began when terrorists launched a surprise ambush on an army convoy in the dense jungles of Battal, aiming to disrupt peace during the Diwali season. However, swift action by the troops, reinforced by special forces and mechanized columns, pushed the terrorists back into the forest.
Phantom played a crucial role in tracking the terrorists’ trail, detecting hidden explosives and identifying potential escape routes. His bravery and loyalty were instrumental in containing the terrorists, but he tragically succumbed to injuries during a close encounter.
The operation was a success, with the terror threat neutralized and no casualties among troops. Senior officials paid tribute to Phantom’s supreme sacrifice, commending the troops’ swift response.
“Phantom’s bravery saved lives and was pivotal to the operation’s success. His sacrifice will be remembered with honor,” said the Defence PRO.
Phantom’s story symbolizes the unwavering spirit of the Indian Army and its K9 unit, highlighting the silent contributions of canine heroes in safeguarding national security. The thwarted ambush stands as a testament to the resilience of security forces and the people of Jammu.
Phantom’s induction into the Army in August 2022 marked the beginning of a remarkable journey, with multiple high-stakes missions under his belt. Born in May 2020, Phantom’s loyalty and valor will never be forgotten.
Phantom’s sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of the high costs borne in the pursuit of national security.
