Indian Navy Intercepts Massive Narcotics Shipment in Western Indian Ocean

Mumbai: In a major operation, the Indian Navy’s frontline frigate, INS Tarkash, has seized a massive shipment of over 2500 kg of narcotics in the Western Indian Ocean. This significant haul underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to combating maritime crime and ensuring regional security.

As part of its ongoing Maritime Security Operations, INS Tarkash has been deployed in the Western Indian Ocean since January 2025. The ship is currently supporting Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, a multinational task force based in Bahrain, and participating in the joint focus operation, Anzac Tiger.

On March 31, INS Tarkash received critical intelligence from Indian Navy P8I aircraft regarding suspicious vessels operating in the area. Swiftly responding to the input, the ship altered its course to intercept the vessels.

Following a systematic interrogation of the suspicious vessels, INS Tarkash intercepted and boarded a suspect dhow. A specialist boarding team, accompanied by Marine Commandos, conducted a thorough search of the vessel, leading to the discovery of over 2500 kg of narcotics, including 2386 kg of hashish and 121 kg of heroin.

The Indian Navy’s successful operation highlights its effectiveness in disrupting and deterring illicit activities, including narcotics trafficking, in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The Navy’s participation in multinational exercises and operations demonstrates its commitment to promoting regional security, stability, and prosperity.
