India’s External Affairs Minister Visits Ireland to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Dublin: In a bid to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Ireland, External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar, embarked on a two-day official visit to Ireland from March 6-7, 2025. The visit was marked by a series of high-level meetings, discussions, and agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
During his visit, Dr. Jaishankar met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Defence of Ireland, Simon Harris. The two ministers engaged in delegation-level talks, reviewing the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation. They discussed various topics, including trade and economy, education, and cultural exchanges.
The two sides explored opportunities to enhance bilateral trade and investment, particularly in areas like information technology, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy. They also discussed ways to strengthen educational ties, including student exchanges, research collaborations, and joint academic programs. Additionally, the ministers agreed to promote cultural exchanges, including art, music, dance, and literature, to foster people-to-people connections.
The visit saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on diplomatic exchanges between India and Ireland. The MoU aims to deepen institutional cooperation and experience sharing on training programs for diplomats. Furthermore, the two sides agreed to establish an India-Ireland Joint Economic Commission to enhance bilateral trade and economic ties. The commission will provide a platform for regular dialogue and cooperation on economic issues.
Dr. Jaishankar delivered a keynote address at the University College of Dublin, where he spoke on India’s view of the world. He interacted with prominent academicians, scholars, and students, discussing perspectives on global affairs.
The External Affairs Minister also paid floral tributes to the Statue of Rabindranath Tagore in St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin. He appreciated the contributions of the Indian community in Ireland, recognizing their role in strengthening bilateral ties.
