India-Iran Discuss Chabahar Port, Regional Stability in Afghanistan, West Asia

New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, India and Iran convened the 19th India-Iran Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in New Delhi on Friday.

The discussions focused on key areas of cooperation, including the strategic Chabahar Port, agricultural collaboration, trade, and economic issues. The two sides also exchanged views on current regional and global developments, such as the situation in Afghanistan, West Asia, and the South Caucasus.

The meeting, co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs of Iran, Dr. Majid Takht Ravanchi, reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral ties.

Foreign Secretary Misri highlighted the significance of Chabahar Port in supporting Afghanistan’s reconstruction and economic development.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in multilateral fora, including the United Nations, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

In addition to the FOC, Dr. Majid Takht Ravanchi also called on External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, with discussions focusing on bilateral matters and current regional challenges. The two sides agreed to continue the momentum of high-level exchanges to strengthen cooperation between India and Iran.

The India-Iran partnership is built on a foundation of historical ties, with the two nations having signed a friendship treaty in 1950. The relationship has been marked by robust commercial cooperation, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people ties.

As India and Iran continue to explore new avenues of cooperation, the 19th FOC marks a significant step forward in deepening their bilateral relationship.
