Korean Cultural Centre India Hosts Seminar to Promote Taekwondo Across India

New Delhi – The Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) organized a two-day seminar, “2024 Seminar for Taekwondo Leaders in All Regions of India,” in New Delhi. The event, held on December 20-21, aimed to develop systematic strategies for promoting and advancing Taekwondo throughout India.

The seminar brought together a diverse group of Taekwondo leaders from across the nation, including secretaries general and chairmen of Taekwondo associations, association leaders, and school instructors.

The KCCI has been actively supporting Taekwondo classes in Indian schools since 2021. This initiative has shown remarkable growth, with 4,039 students from 48 schools and 66 classes participating in Taekwondo lessons in 2024. This represents more than double the number of participants in 2023, highlighting the rising interest and engagement in Taekwondo across the country.

To meet the growing demand for Taekwondo, the seminar focused on discussing regional instructor training, operational strategies for associations, and development plans for various Taekwondo programs. The event marked a historic moment in India Taekwondo, as the India Taekwondo and the Taekwondo Federation of India came together for the first time, showcasing a strong commitment to collaboration.

Notable dignitaries attended the seminar, including Sanjay Saraswat, former Deputy Director General of the Sports Authority of India; Namdev Shirgaonkar, President of India Taekwondo; and Grandmaster Jimmy R. Jagtiani, founder of the Taekwondo Federation of India.

The seminar provided a platform for Taekwondo leaders to discuss ways to expand the sport beyond the Delhi region to all states of India. Participants explored strategies for promoting Taekwondo, including Kukkiwon-affiliated initiatives and Poomsae competitions. This united effort aims to strategically promote Taekwondo with a shared focus across India.

In a step forward, the Kukkiwon, under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, plans to establish an India branch in 2025. This office will provide organized and systematic support for the development of Taekwondo in India, further boosting the sport’s growth in the country.

Hwang Il Yong, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre India, emphasized the Korean government’s consistent support for the growth of Taekwondo in India. “The Korean government has consistently supported the growth of Taekwondo in India,” he said. “I encourage everyone here to show the power of unity and collaboration that can propel Indian Taekwondo forward. I hope to see unified strength and innovative ideas to make ‘Make India Taekwondo’ a reality.”
