A high-level Indian delegation led by Dr. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, participated in the G-20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) Ministerial Meeting in Belem, Brazil. The meeting, held from October 30 to November 1, 2024, aimed to finalize the first Ministerial declaration on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
Dr. Mishra shared India’s progress in reducing disaster risks and upscaled disaster financing. He emphasized India’s proactive approach to DRR, focusing on early warning systems, disaster-resilient infrastructure, DRR financing, resilient recovery, and nature-based solutions.
The Indian delegation also participated in bilateral meetings with ministers from Brazil, Japan, Norway, South Africa, South Korea, Germany, and international organizations. Dr. Mishra reiterated India’s commitment to the Sendai Framework and called for increased international collaboration.
India took a significant step forward in disaster risk reduction by establishing the first Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) during its G20 Presidency in 2023, marking a major milestone in its efforts to address global challenges posed by disasters and climate emergencies.
Dr. PK Mishra congratulated Brazil for continuing the DRRWG and elevating it to a ministerial level, a testament to the group’s growing importance. He also expressed India’s support for South Africa’s upcoming G20 Presidency in 2025, ensuring continuity and progress in disaster risk reduction efforts.
India’s leadership in disaster risk reduction is further demonstrated through its The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), workshops and training programs to enhance disaster resilience.
India’s participation underscores its growing role in global DRR efforts and commitment to building a safer and more resilient world.
