Jaishankar Urges Firm Action Against Terrorism, Extremism, and Separatism
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism, extremism, and separatism, citing them as major obstacles to regional cooperation and development. These “three evils” threaten peace and stability and hinder trade, energy flows, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.
Jaishankar’s remarks came during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of State, where he represented India. He highlighted SCO’s role in regional security, particularly in combating terrorism, including cross-border terrorism.
Terrorism, extremism, and separatism pose significant challenges to global peace and stability. Jaishankar stressed the importance of implementation, noting that joint statements and programs to combat these evils are critical but must be backed by action.
The international community must work together to address these challenges and promote peace, stability, and development. Effective cooperation and collective action are essential in countering the “three evils” and fostering a secure and prosperous region.
Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, congratulated Pakistan on its presidency of the SCO Council of Heads of Government, assuring India’s full support for a successful tenure. Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar highlighted the pressing global challenges, including ongoing conflicts, the COVID-19 pandemic, and disruptions in climate, supply chains, and finance.
“The world is moving towards multi-polarity,” Jaishankar emphasized. “Globalization and rebalancing are realities that cannot be denied, creating new opportunities for collaboration.” However, he stressed that cooperation must be based on mutual respect, sovereign equality, and territorial integrity, built on genuine partnerships rather than unilateral agendas.
Jaishankar reiterated the importance of countering terrorism, extremism, and separatism, as outlined in the SCO Charter. “Development and growth require peace and stability,” he emphasized.
By working together, Jaishankar envisioned vast potential for regional cooperation. Industrial cooperation can enhance competitiveness, MSME collaboration can create jobs, and collective efforts can attract investment. Business communities will thrive through expanded networks, and collaborative connectivity will streamline logistics and energy.
Environmental protection, climate action, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food and energy security, culture, education, and sports are areas ripe for cooperation. “The potential for synergy is vast, and it’s up to us to seize it,” Jaishankar concluded. “By working together, we can create a brighter future for all.”
