Taiwan Condemns China’s Military Drills, Urges Global Support for Democracy

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has strongly condemned China for launching its Joint Sword-2024B military drill around Taiwan, undermining regional peace and stability. This move challenges the rules-based international order.
In a statement, Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has noted that China on October 14 launched its so-called Joint Sword-2024B military drill around Taiwan, once again challenging the rules-based international order and gravely undermining regional peace and stability. MOFA strongly condemns China and urges it to pull back and immediately cease its military provocations.”
Despite President Lai Ching-te’s recent expression of goodwill towards China, calling for responsible action and cooperation to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity, China remains determined to intimidate Taiwan through military exercises.
Taiwan said that China’s actions threaten Taiwan’s democracy and unilaterally disrupt the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. MOFA denounces China’s use of false pretexts to justify disagreement and strife and urges the country to cease its military provocations.
Taiwan is calling on nations worldwide to recognize China’s authoritarian and expansionist nature and support democratic Taiwan.
“The international community is urged to defend the values of freedom and democracy, safeguard the rules-based international order, and protect the freedom, openness, and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.” said Taiwan Foreign Office.
As tensions escalate, Taiwan seeks to strengthen ties with other nations. The international community watches closely as the situation unfolds, with many nations expressing concern over China’s growing military presence and its implications for regional stability.
China’s Joint Sword-2024B military drill kicked off on October 14, 2024, with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducting large-scale joint operations around Taiwan. This exercise involves troops from the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, with vessels and aircraft approaching Taiwan from multiple directions.
