In a groundbreaking achievement, a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) has successfully scaled an unclimbed peak in the Gorichen range of Arunachal Pradesh Himalayas, naming it “Tsangyang Gyatso Peak” in honor of His Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama.
The 6383 MSL (20,942 ft) high peak, located in the Tawang-West Kameng region, was one of the most technically challenging and unexplored summits in the region. The NIMAS team overcame immense challenges, including sheer ice walls, treacherous crevasses, and a 2-kilometer-long glacier, to reach the summit.
By naming the peak after the 6th Dalai Lama, Rigzen Tsangyang Gyatso, NIMAS pays tribute to his timeless wisdom and profound contributions to the Monpa community and beyond.
The expedition was one of the toughest ever undertaken by the NIMAS team, requiring sheer determination and teamwork to navigate dangerous crevasses, steep ice walls, and unpredictable weather conditions.
NIMAS has informed the Indian Mountaineering Foundation about the ascent and the decision to name the peak. The necessary formalities are being completed to ensure “Tsangyang Gyatso Peak” is recognized on the official map.
This historic climb celebrates Arunachal Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage and positions the region as a key destination for mountaineering and adventure sports, attracting explorers and adventure enthusiasts globally.
The National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) is a premier institution for adventure and mountaineering in India, promoting exploration, training, and research in the field.
