Quad Leaders’ Summit Yields Significant Announcements for Indo-Pacific Region
Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined forces with key global leaders at the sixth Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware on September 21, 2024. Hosted by US President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., the summit also brought together Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Quad Leaders’ Summit has yielded significant announcements aimed at boosting development and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The summit brought together leaders from India, the United States, Australia, and Japan to discuss key areas of collaboration.
A major highlight of the summit was the collective pledge to enhance energy efficiency in the region. This initiative includes the deployment and manufacturing of affordable and efficient cooling systems, a crucial step towards mitigating the impacts of climate change.
In another significant move, India has established a space-based web portal for Mauritius, promoting the concept of open science and enhancing space-based monitoring of extreme weather events and climate impact. This initiative underscores the Quad’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development.
To foster talent and innovation in the region, India has introduced a new sub-category under the Quad STEM Fellowship. This program offers students from the Indo-Pacific region the opportunity to pursue a 4-year bachelor’s level engineering program at a Government of India-funded technical institute.
Looking ahead, the Leaders have welcomed India’s hosting of the next Quad Leaders’ Summit in 2025, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the Quad agenda. To further this goal, the Leaders adopted the Quad Wilmington Declaration, solidifying their partnership and shared vision for the region.
By leveraging their collective strengths, the Quad nations aim to create a more resilient and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
