In a historic endeavor, two Indian Navy women officers, Lt Cdr Roopa A and Lt Cdr Dilna K, are poised to embark on an extraordinary sailing expedition, circumnavigating the globe onboard INSV Tarini. This remarkable journey, Navika Sagar Parikrama II, marks a significant milestone in India’s ocean sailing tradition and maritime heritage.
The Indian Navy has been at the forefront of revitalizing sailing traditions, emphasizing the importance of preserving maritime heritage and promoting seamanship skills. The pioneering efforts of Sail Training Ships INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini, and circumnavigation onboard INSVs Mhadei and Tarini, have established the Indian Navy as a leader in ocean sailing expeditions.
Lt Cdr Roopa A and Lt Cdr Dilna K have been preparing for this expedition for three years, gaining valuable experience through various sailing sorties, including a trans-oceanic expedition from Goa to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Town and back. They have also undertaken sailing expeditions from Goa to Port Blair and back, and from Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius, in double-handed mode.
Under the mentorship of ace circumnavigator Cdr Abhilash Tomy (Retd.), KC, NM, the officers have undergone rigorous training, honing their skills and physical fitness. The circumnavigation of INSV Tarini will be a testament to their expertise and mental alertness.
This expedition showcases India’s growing prominence in global maritime activities and gender equality on the high seas.
