New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has handed over the Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket (MR-MOCR) to the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in the development of niche technology for the country’s naval defense.
The MR-MOCR, developed by DRDO’s Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur, uses Microwave Obscurant Chaff (MOC) to obscure radar signals and create a microwave shield around platforms and assets, reducing radar detection. The rocket, when fired, forms a microwave obscurant cloud in space, providing an effective shield against hostile threats with Radio Frequency seekers.
The MR-MOCR has undergone successful Phase-I and Phase-II trials, demonstrating the MOC cloud’s effectiveness in reducing Radar Cross Section (RCS) by up to 90%. The Indian Navy has cleared the MR-MOCR for deployment, and a significant number of rockets have been handed over to the Navy.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and the Indian Navy on the successful development of MR-MOCR, terming it a significant step towards achieving Aatmanirbharta in defense. DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat handed over the MR-MOCR to Rear Admiral Brijesh Vashistha, Director General of Naval Armament Inspection, Indian Navy.
This indigenous development of MR-MOCR showcases India’s growing capabilities in niche technologies and its commitment to strengthening the country’s naval defense.
